Debi and Galen Havner

Debi and Galen HavnerIn their relatively brief time in Memphis, Debi and Galen Havner can already be touted as local treasures. Originally from Arkansas and Wyoming respectfully, Debi and Galen followed their daughter Alice to Memphis following her graduation from Rhodes College. Now comfortably at home in Central Gardens, Debi and Galen shared their perspectives on the Dixon, Memphis, the arts, and their personal philanthropy with Director of Planned Giving Susan Johnson.

Tell us about yourselves.

Debi: My father brought us to Bentonville in 1966 (Walmart) when I was 13. I was involved in the family business, chaired the Bentonville Planning Commission, was engaged in the establishment of Crystal Bridges (Museum of American Art), and I remain a dedicated gardener.

Galen: I was an education administrator for over forty years, also community-driven, and fell in love with Memphis, its people, its culture, the arts, the food, and the architecture.

What would you advise someone who is considering joining, donating to, or volunteering at the Dixon?

Galen: I admire the fiscal responsibility of the Dixon, the unique combination of art and horticulture, and the variety of programs that attract a diverse audience. We both appreciate the depth of education offered through Dixon programs as opposed to simple exposure, especially the outdoor opportunities in the gardens, and the diligence and stamina of the small staff that accomplishes so much cheerfully. I encourage everyone to read about the programs that are well detailed in the newsletter and in email blasts and to participate in those of interest.

You have made a generous provision for the Dixon in your estate plan. What inspired that gift?

Debi: I think we were most inspired by the way that the Dixon creates art experiences for people all across the community. I saw how my hometown of Bentonville emerged during the planning stages and following the opening of Crystal Bridges. I see that happening at the Dixon. People need art, and the Dixon provides programs that we hope to help sustain through our support.

Would you encourage other donors to make planned gifts to the Dixon?

Debi: It makes me feel good to help with the Dixon's future plans. I share its vision.

Galen: For sure. In fact, I recommend it.

How did your experiences with Crystal Bridges affect your decision to become actively involved at the Dixon?

Debi: Our love has been the arts for many years. We appreciate a variety of art experiences. We believe that people must have art in their lives as it encourages humility, creativity, big thinking, and is a mirror of the good part of the world. We see art as the glue that unites our society.

Galen: We travel frequently and on our travels we visit and tour museums. I see a museum renaissance globally and in Memphis museums, too. I see the Dixon trying new things, always changing, and encouraging people to start or build their own art collections.

As you reflect on the future of the Dixon, what are your hopes?

Both: That the Dixon will be here forever.

What are your hopes for the future of Memphis?

Galen: I hope that people realize what a great city this is and embrace it more. Debi and I see more good in Memphis every time we return from our comings and goings. There is so much diversity which has been a draw for us personally.

Your planned gift to the Dixon establishes a part of your legacy. Based on that, do you have a message to share with our members and supporters?

Debi: While we will not see our gift put to use, we are comfortable with the performance of the Dixon. We know that something we've left behind will help others have an enriched life. The thing about leaving a legacy, the size of the gift is not as important as the generosity and the kindness to which it is given. We would like to be remembered as being that way.

Thank you, Debi and Galen Havner, for sharing your views and for making Memphis and the Dixon your home. You, too, can make a difference not only at the Dixon, but also in the community we share.
